No One Knows by J.T. Ellison
About this book: (from the publisher) The day Aubrey Hamilton’s husband is declared dead by the state of Tennessee should bring closure so she can move on with her life. But Aubrey doesn’t want to move on; she wants Josh back. It’s been five years since he disappeared, since their blissfully happy marriage—they were happy, weren’t they?—screeched to a halt and Aubrey became the prime suspect in his disappearance. Five years of emptiness, solitude, loneliness, questions. Why didn’t Josh show up at his friend’s bachelor party? Was he murdered? Did he run away? And now, all this time later, who is the mysterious yet strangely familiar figure suddenly haunting her new life?
In No One Knows, the New York Times bestselling coauthor of the Nicholas Drummond series expertly peels back the layers of a complex woman who is hiding dark secrets beneath her unassuming exterior. This masterful thriller for fans of Gillian Flynn, Liane Moriarty, and Paula Hawkins will pull readers into a you’ll-never-guess merry-go-round of danger and deception. Round and round and round it goes, where it stops…no one knows.

If this book were a movie, I would rate it: R for profanity and sexual content. Quoting She Reads co-founder Ariel Lawhon: “it is a bit grittier and sexier than any of the books we’ve chosen for She Reads in the past” — which is a tactful way to say this is not one for those “more gentle in their reading tastes.”

Reflection: Where to begin with my reflection on this page-turning thriller? I hardly know, so I suppose I’ll begin with what I do know. Gripping? Yes — from page one. Fascinating characters? Without a doubt — like ’em or leave ’em. Unpredictable? Uh-huh. To the nth degree.
My uncertainty comes not from the quality of this novel but from my apparent ambivalence toward unreliable narrators. I can’t decide if I’m a fan. They unsettle me. (Saying far more about me than about them, no doubt.) On the one hand, I like stories that — as in life — promise a twisty-turny adventure. On the other hand — also as in life — I like to at least pretend I’m a little more in control.
Ah, there it is. This book made me feel out of control, even while — oh, so very cleverly — its author was very much in it.
The ending, too, I can’t decide whether I love or not. It perches on that delicate fulcrum of my psyche between admiration and anxiety, tipping neither one way nor the other. But there too — I’ve a sneaking suspicion that’s precisely what the author intended. Which makes it the perfect ending for this riveting tale.
