Mary DeMuth, author interview

I’m delighted to welcome acclaimed author Mary DeMuth to Story Matters today. Mary is a multi-faceted writer with several novels, a memoir, and many non-fiction books to her name. She’s also just released Around the Word in 60 Seconds, a devotional for teens, which she wrote in partnership with the influential youth ministry iShine. You can visit Mary online at MaryDeMuth.com.

Mary, tell us a bit about yourself: your family, your writer’s journey, other interests.

I’m a wife of one (thankfully!) of 22 years and the mom of three teens, one in college. I’m training for my first half marathon in December. I blog and write a lot of books, which doesn’t leave a lot of extra time, though when I can I take photos and do some graphic design. I also love to cook, garden and redecorate with what I already have.

How do you balance writing with your responsibilities as a mother?

I try to keep a schedule and a routine. I work while my kids are in school and try to take time off when they’re home. I set goals. I work hard. But I try to keep weekends free for them.

You already have multiple novels, non-fiction books and a memoir to your name. Why was it important for you to write this book, a devotional for tweens?

When my kids were in their tween years, there really wasn’t a lot out there for kids straddling the border between kid and teen. This is my answer to that. I’m grateful for iShine for inviting me along.

Sounds good. Tell us more!

The teen years can be exciting, challenging, and unpredictable—and so can the journey of getting to know Jesus! Around the Word in 60 Seconds is the perfect road map for both of those adventures. This devotional encourages readers to walk closely with God and learn how to handle tough situations with spiritual strength. It contains 52 weeks of stories illustrating the things that guys and girls encounter every day (like love, family, friends, money, temptation, school, and many more). An activity, prayer, and verses help it hit home. Through short, daily interactions with God, readers will learn what it means to truly follow Jesus with changed hearts and lives.

In your Introduction to Around the Word, as an explanation for why your devo contains so many stories, you say, “I firmly believe that you can better understand the Bible when a story is wrapped around it. That’s why Jesus told so many stories…” Are there other reasons why story matters to you?

I’m a storyteller by nature, so they simply matter to me because that’s how I process the world. Truth comes better to me when its encapsulated by a story. When I’m in church, my ears perk when the pastor starts a story.

Mary, thanks so much for sharing with us today.

Readers, Around the Word in 60 Seconds makes the perfect gift for the teen or tween in your life. My own tweener will find a copy under the Christmas tree. To purchase one for yours, visit amazon.com or barnesandnoble.com.

Well said, Paula. I’m also so struck by Mary’s generosity. She’s all about paying her blessings forward. ~ kj
