Dancing Upon Barren Land, book review

I don’t normally review devotionals on this blog, but this was one I couldn’t refuse because the subject is such a big part of my story: infertility. Many of you know that my husband and I traveled this painful road for seven long years. Dancing Upon Barren Land: Prayers, Scripture Reflections, and Hope for Infertility by Lesli A. Westfall is the book I wish I had on that journey.

From the back cover: When experiencing infertility, the unexpected happens. Your feelings about yourself and your relationship with others and your belief in God are confused and complicated. Dancing Upon Barren Land – Prayer, Scripture Reflections, and Hope for Infertility is a helpful companion for those dark, lonely days. *Specific Prayers Topics and Supporting Scripture *Helpful Truths to Living Life While You Wait *Supporting Ideas for Family Members or Friends *Resource Aid for Ministry Leader *Discussion Topics for Support Groups

Westfall writes of her own experience, from the heart in a highly relational way. Perhaps her most valuable gift to readers is that, as of publication, her prayers for fertility have not been answered–at least, not in the form of a child. And yet, though her longing remains as wide and deep as ever, she writes from an amazing position of peace and joy. She is a still-barren woman who is settled and happy. Her story provides a powerful testimony as to what can happen when we truly release our desires to God.

Dancing Upon Barren Land is a tome small enough to tuck into your purse as a resource to have with you at all times. To refer to for strength and encouragement and comfort when you’re suddenly hit by the unexpected. The prayers are alphabetized by subject for easy reference, and Westfall covers it all, from Anger to Abortion to feeling Forgotten and Waiting.

A jewel of a book, highly recommended.
